Sustainability at The Bellbird Primary School

At The Bellbird Primary School, we are committed to promoting sustainability and working together as a school community to reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint.

The Department for Education places increasing importance on sustainability and climate change within education. Its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy sets an ambition for education settings to develop their own climate action plans, bringing together actions to reduce carbon emissions, improve the environment, increase biodiversity and help children develop their understanding of sustainability.

At The Bellbird, we want sustainability to be more than a document. We want our pupils to understand that the choices we make individually and collectively can make a genuine difference to our school, our local environment and the wider world.

Our Sustainability Lead is Sarah Osborn, supported by our sustainability link governor, Dr Tim Wreghitt. Together with pupils and staff, they help to ensure that sustainability remains an important part of the school’s development.

We have also signed up to the Eco-Schools programme and have established an Eco-Committee, giving pupils an important voice in identifying priorities and helping to lead positive environmental change across the school.

In 2025, members of our Eco-Committee also had the exciting opportunity to meet Pippa Heylings MP, Member of Parliament for South Cambridgeshire. This gave our pupils the chance to discuss environmental and sustainability issues with their local MP, share their own ideas and hear more about how environmental issues are considered at both a local and national level. It was a valuable opportunity for our pupils to see that their voices matter and that, by becoming involved and taking action, they can play their part in creating a more sustainable future.

Our work is brought together through our Sustainability Action Plan, which sets out the practical steps we are taking to make The Bellbird a greener and more sustainable school.
